Design and Craftsmanship
We work individually with you to create custom living rooms that are intelligently planned for how you live and what you need to store. Urban Homecraft specializes in thoughtfully-designed built-ins and cabinetry that turns simple rooms into stunning, organized, and multitasking spaces.
Like all our woodwork, our cabinetry is made to the highest standards of craftsmanship; handmade by expert craftsmen in our Brooklyn studio. All wood finishes, such as paint or lacquer, are applied in-house, and installation is done by our talented craftsmen. The end result is a custom piece that is designed to meet your needs long after we have left.

White cabinets and built-ins for a sunlit living room
This family had a pre-war Brooklyn apartment with a fireplace they wanted to accentuate. They envisioned simple white cabinets and shelving as a modern complement to the fireplace, as well as accent lighting to light up the crown moulding woodwork of their building, all while concealing wires, radiators, and equipment, and increasing storage space.
Lights behind the shelves accentuated the crown moulding woodwork. These LED lights stay cool in temperature (though the glow is warm). A custom radiator cover with aluminum mesh was also incorporated into the built-ins.
There was an existing built-in on the left side of the room that was too small for their storage needs; it was knocked away and reclaimed for use in the adjoining laundry room, where they needed more space. Then all the walls surrounding the fireplace were used for tall, modern built-in bookshelves and cabinets that could hold everything they needed to store.
The cabinets had inner shelves that were built the right size to keep kids' stuff tucked away. All existing AV components were concealed behind the cabinets, and controlled by an infrared sensor that allowed one to use remotes even when the cabinet doors were closed. Quasi-floating cabinets and floating shelves
Cabinets with a deep toe kick appear to be floating. These dark-stained walnut cabinets have a deep toe kick; the overhang of the cabinets casts a shadow to create a quasi-floating look. Matching floating wall shelves above were also part of the project.

Walnut cabinets with white shelving
This newly engaged couple was settling into their first home together, and wanted built-in cabinets and bookshelves. We did not want the whole room to look too dark, so we settled on a mix of white built-in shelves with walnut cabinets underneath.
The backs of the shelves were lit up by LED lights on dimmers. This provided a nice source of indirect lighting, which was important since this room also served as the bedroom. We did not want to see a big differentiation between the doors and drawers, so touch latches (push-to-open) were used for the walnut cabinets and drawers, to avoid any pulls (knobs or handles) from interrupting the walnut grain pattern. All the shelves were adjustable. These particular shelves looked like fixed shelves because all the metal supports were concealed in slots.
The custom walnut lectern in the background was for a dictionary of sentimental value. See this piece in custom furniture.
Stained oak built-ins
This custom living room built-in was finished with a warm custom stained oak with part of the brick wall left expose behind the TV. The lower section incorporates large drawer spaces and closed cabinets to conceal A/V equipment. The middle shelves are adjustable with our magic wire system, and supports are concealed within the shelves.
